Allphones is proud to again be the major sponsor of the NSW Surf Life Saving Championships. This year’s event is the second in a three year sponsorship arrangement we have with Surf Life Saving NSW.
Last year’s championships were extremely successful and we are looking forward to this year’s highlight of the NSW sporting calendar which kicks off on 26 February, the 2009 Allphones NSW Surf Life Saving Championships.
While we’re the main sponsor, the Championships will be hosted by Swansea Belmont Surf Life Saving Club on beautiful Blacksmiths Beach, just south of Newcastle.
One
of the main reasons why we’re keen to support this action-packed,
hard fought surf sports competition is that it’s such an important
event for the Surf Life Saving fraternity.
If you go to the beach at the weekend, you’ll see Surf Lifesavers, kitted out in their red and yellow uniforms and caps and it’s great to know they’re there to keep an eye on anyone who ventures between the flags.
They give hours of their time and play a vital role on our beaches – these volunteers save lives every weekend, whether it’s preventing people getting into trouble or performing rescues and first aid measures throughout the beach season, we are pleased and proud to help them keep up their valuable work.
The other side of surf club life is the competition. Every year Surf Life Saving Clubs along the coast gather their members and put their best team forward for the NSW State Championships.
The carnival is among the largest surf carnivals in the world. Over 15,000 people including competitors, officials, spectators, organisers and media will gather on Blacksmiths Beach this year.
Hotly contested medals and the biggest draw cards for spectators are the Ironman and Ironwoman finals. These grueling events produce stars like Nathan Smith and Chris Allum from Cronulla, both holders of the NSW Open Ironman title.
The
women’s medals are dominated by Naomi Flood of Manly and local Nikki
Chapman of Swansea Belmont who will battle it out for the NSW Open
Ironwoman medal.
These elite athletes will take to the sand for the Championships and while they show off their enviable fitness and serious determination, the titles offer events in other areas.
Medals are awarded for first aid, rescue and resuscitation, marching and lifesaving and patrolling skills as well as beach runs and board and surf ski relays.
As the Championships come to a head on the final Sunday, 1 March, all eyes are on the Overall Pointscore to see which club will win the most points for the carnival’s events.
Cronulla has had a dream run for over a decade, but was outclassed by Manly at last year’s event. Other clubs will certainly be giving the defending champions a run for their money this year.
